Division of Nephrology
Welcome to the Division of Nephrology
The Division of Nephrology within the Department of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School strives to fulfill the mission of the school by delivering high-quality clinical care, providing the very best training to the next generation of physicians, and conducting cutting-edge research to prevent and treat kidney diseases.
Our division includes highly skilled, kind, and compassionate faculty members in general and transplant nephrology, nephrology fellows in training, advanced practice providers, and a staff of administrative and clinical personnel - all devoted to delivering excellent patient care and experience. Our team has broad expertise in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic kidney diseases, hypertension, renal calculi, genetic disorders, glomerular disorders, and electrolyte imbalances. We are also growing subspecialty care - including onconephrology, glomerular diseases, critical care nephrology, and home dialysis - so that patients across New Jersey have access to nephrology expertise closer to home.
Our faculty also provide medical care for patients with end stage kidney disease. We provide nephrology care for patients requiring dialysis throughout the state of New Jersey and serve as the Medical Director of DCI New Brunswick, a nonprofit dialysis clinic. We continue to grow access to kidney and pancreas transplantation under the leadership of Dr. Neeraj Singh, who serves as the Medical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Our faculty provide training and education for the next generation of physicians. The diverse expertise of our faculty has allowed us to provide high-quality training to nephrology fellows, many of whom currently practice in the state of New Jersey. Dr. Steve Khalil serves as the program director of our nephrology fellowship program. We are also closely involved in teaching internal medicine residents and medical students and many of our faculty form the core group of educators. Our faculty also provide research mentorship and support to trainees at various stages of their career from college students to junior faculty. Research and scholarship are a growing focus of our division. Our faculty lead NIH-funded studies on biomarkers of acute interstitial nephritis and acute kidney injury and foundation-funded studies on blood pressure management. Several of our faculty also participate in industry-sponsored clinical trials in glomerular diseases and transplantation providing early access to cutting edge therapies to our patients. We are also actively recruiting physician-scientists to build independent, grant-funded research programs. We continue to increase support for our clinically focused faculty and fellows in pursuing scholarship, presenting at national meetings, and publishing their work.
As a division, our overall goal is to improve the lives of patients with kidney diseases. We are passionate about what we do. We treat people, not just conditions, and we give our patients the time and attention they deserve. We take pride in the personalized care we provide and remain accessible and responsive to the concerns and needs of those we serve.

Advance Your Career
The mission of the Nephrology Fellowship training program is to transform health care for New Jersey and the nation through innovation and excellence in nephrology education, research, patient-and family centered care, and addressing the diverse needs of our community. Our goal is to produce physicians who are: (1) clinically competent in the field of nephrology; (2) capable of working in a variety of settings; and (3) possess habits of lifelong learning to build upon their knowledge, skills and professionalism.
Our Efforts
The Division of Nephrology is involved in research in many aspects of kidney disease and treatment. Our fellows and attending physicians present annually at the national scientific meetings of the National Kidney Foundation or the American Society of Nephrology.
We are currently co-investigators in NIH-funded multicenter studies of the role of the APOL1 gene in the transplantation of African Americans, Drug-Disease Interactions in the Elderly, COVID-19, and the kidney.
Our Programs
Chronic Kidney Disease and Hypertension
The clinical services provided by our nephrologists and associated clinical teams cover all aspects of kidney disease, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The faculty members provide broad expertise in the diagnosis and management of hypertension, renal calculi, genetic disorders, glomerular disorders, onconephrology, acute and chronic kidney diseases, all forms of dialysis, and kidney and pancreas transplantation.
We work together as a committed clinical practice group, providing round-the-clock care for patients with renal disease and providing easy accessibility to consultative services, both in our outpatient and inpatient settings.
Dialysis
We hold the Medical Directorships at DCI New Brunswick and have a large end-stage renal disease program that provides care for patients throughout the state of New Jersey.
In addition to treating patients with in-center hemodialysis, we also have a growing home dialysis program, offering peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis and allowing our patients the flexibility to choose from all available dialysis modalities.
Transplantation
Our faculty runs a successful kidney transplant program, performing living donor and deceased donor kidney transplants. We also have the largest simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant program in New Jersey. We maintain an inpatient transplant service and provide outpatient care for over 1200 patients whom we have previously transplanted.
Care is multidisciplinary including nephrologists, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and a dietician. After the first three months following a transplant, care is provided collaboratively with the patient’s referring nephrologist.
Our transplant nephrologists serve as a resource to nephrologists throughout the state who frequently call for advice and assistance in the care of their patients.
